Indic Keyboard is the first Android keyboard for Indian languages, now rebuilt from the ground up. Type in your language anywhere you would type in English: messages, email, search and more.

How do I enable it?

A setup wizard walks you through turning on the keyboard and picking your languages and layouts.

I see a warning about "collecting data" when enabling the keyboard

Android shows this for every third party keyboard. Indic Keyboard does not collect anything you type.

What is a keyboard layout?

Each language offers different ways to type:

  • Transliteration: type in English letters and they turn into your script. "namaste" becomes नमस्ते.
  • Predictive Transliteration: transliteration that learns your words and suggests the right spelling.
  • Inscript: the Government of India standard layout. If you know it on desktop, it works here too.
  • Phonetic: letters sit where their English sound-alikes are.
  • Compact: no shift key. Long press a letter for more options.
